Intel’s socket 2066 “Skylake X” platform was launched in the summer of 2017 and received two subsequent architectural refinements, concluding with “Cascade Lake X” in the Winter of 2019.
Each “refresh” germinated its own product line of Core i9 “X” branded processors along with a trio of “Extreme Edition” models, all of which could be purchased and installed as “drop in” upgrades for systems with the appropriate BIOS updates.
Asus, Gigabyte and EVGA all released motherboards based on the Intel’s C621 chipset, which had already established a presence in the enterprise sector but in these instances was enhanced with a host of “enthusiast class” features, including heavy duty voltage regulators, finely incremented power distribution, dual 24pin ATX inputs and numerous full length PCI-E slots providing maximum bandwidth to peripherals such as NVme RAID controllers, card based SSDs, 10GB LAN adapters and capable of supporting multi-GPU configurations.
These boards embodied an alternate Socket 3647 socket design and were engineered specifically for Intel’s Xeon-W 3175X, a 28 core variant of its “Workstation” christened siblings sporting an unlocked multiplier and aimed primarily at the “professional user” with specific applicatory references to content creation and scientific research.
Given Intel’s lack of any legitimate HEDT platform in the years following Skylake X, many considered this radical reimagining of server grade hardware to be its non-lineal successor and moreover, a concerted one shot response to AMD’s Zen+ and Zen 2 “Threadripper” products, which continued to occupy the “high end” market and offer an attractively priced alternative solution with either comparable or superior performance to the same customers.
